England and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales will face off in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
