The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
